Established since 1998, the Australian and New Zealand Head & Neck Cancer Society is composed of head and neck oncologists from the disciplines of surgery, radiation oncology and medical oncology.
Develop a design that was simple and modern but still connected to the group’s heritage.
It needed to emphasise the professional and scientific focus of the Society and reflect the networking, close interaction and collaboration between the many membership disciplines.
As the logo was originally designed by the late Professor Christopher O’Brien, an esteemed and widely recognised figure across Australia, C2M’s approach was to separate and simplify the existing design elements.
- The society’s name was made more dominant to reflect the society’s desire to be an advocacy group for patients. As a result of the new name emphasis, the crab symbolising ‘cancer’ was dropped.
- Blue colouring maintains link to original logo.
- The head and neck remains prominent.
- Linked circles suggest networking of professionals in the Society and also creates an impression of a scientific emblem.
- Circles are placed to represent the Southern Cross, linking Australia and New Zealand, instead of globe image.
As a result the logo sits well alongside but stands out amongst the logos of other scientific, medical and head and neck societies.
The graphic logo proposed by C2M was an instant hit with the Executive Committee and (with some minor tweaks) it was deemed to be appropriate and was adopted. Sitting alongside the name, it is a striking but quite simple emblem.
